WEEK 4 (2 AUGUST 2010)

Today is the third day for the class PBEY3102 Using and Developing Resources for the ESL Classroom. After Puan Foziah greeted us, the presentation session starts. Today there are four presentations based on the following sub-topics of Chapter 1: Working with Young Language Learners:

Sub-topic
1.1 Children’s ability to grasp meaning
1.2 Children’s creative use of limited language resources
1.4 Children’s instinct for play and fun
1.5 The role of Imagination

I learnt a lot of information and gather some realizations during the presentation session.

SELF-REFLECTION

Presentation 1: 1.1 Children’s ability to grasp meaning

From this presentation, I realize that children are capable to grasp meaning even before they not understand the individual words. Children are not born with ‘blank slate’ but they are capable to pick up the ‘meaning’ of thing by one’s:

 Intonation
 Gestures
 Facial Expressions
 Actions
 Demonstration

Consequently, this make me realize that teacher should aware these and use these examples to give clue to students in the ESL classroom. I find these clues are effective as they can help students to guest the meaning rather than teacher directly translates in Bahasa Melayu when eliciting knowledge in English lesson. It is hope that teacher aware of children’s ability to grasp meaning and not underestimated them that they might not know what is the teacher’s intended meaning through facial expression, etc.

Presentation 2: 1.2 Children’s creative use of limited language resources

In this presentation, I realize that children are creative in creating and using limited language resources. Children will simply ‘experiment’ the language that they might familiar when they are talking. Even though sometimes it seems ‘ungrammatically’ correct the way children speak, but, this is a fundamental phenomenon for language development. I remember last month, my 4-year old sister, when she watching cartoon entitled “Finding Nemo” in Astro Disney channel, she simply shout “Nemo….mak” and ee understand the meaning that she wanted to convey is a fish. Later, when she saw fish in an aquarium, she simply said “Nemo” !!!

Thus, this shows that children are creative in conveying messages even though they have limited language resources.

According to Susan Halliwell (1992), in to order to make the most of the creative language skill the children bring with them, we therefor have to provide them with occasions when:

1. The urge to communicate makes them find some way of expressing themselves;

2. The language demanded by the activity is unpredictable and isn’t just asking the children to repeat set phrases, but is encouraging them to construct language actively for themselves.

In short, from this presentation, I realize that we should give opportunity to children to speak even with some errors in language. This ultimately will make children impatient to communicate and they probably will make more not fewer mistakes.

Presentation 3: 1.4 Children’s instinct for play and fun

Through this presentation, I realize that children have an instinct for play and fun. If in ESL classroom, teacher can add the elements of fun and games in eliciting knowledge to children. Since children love fun, teacher should conduct a game that they are using English. Thus, this ultimately will make them learn indirectly the intended objectives of the lesson. So, teacher should be creative in exploiting the children instinct so that through games, children are motivated to learn English in a fun way! This is interesting, mustn’t it?

There are so many activities that teacher can conduct for example:

Language Games

Treasure Hunt

In the book entitled Teaching English in the Primary Classroom by Susan Halliwell, I notice in page 40-95 are activities that teacher can carry out such as:
Group 1: “Do something about it”
Group 2: Guess
Group 3: Get Up and find out!”
Group 4: “Can you remember?”
Group 5: “Think for yourself!”

In short, teacher should be creative in conducting games and also must ensure that whatever the games are, teachers must have language focus or teaching points so that children indirectly learn and gain some knowledge while they are having fun!

Presentation 4: 1.5 The role of Imagination

This presentation is presented by my group. Imagination play important roles in developing children’s language specifically English language. Teacher should exploit the role of imagination in eliciting language. For example, teacher can use Suggestopedia approach in imparting knowledge. I find this link very useful for me in getting know details about this approach on how teacher can exploit the role of imagination in learning.
http://www.jwelford.demon.co.uk/brainwaremap/suggest.html

In short, children have no limitation on their creativity in imagination. Teachers should lead them explore anything via imagination. Later, teacher can ask children to write what they have experience in their imagination that for definitely will be interesting for children to write in English!

TUTORIAL TASK

After the presentation ends, Puan Foziah gives us some tutorial tasks to do. The tasks are:

1. Download the song “Waka Waka by Shakira”
2. Find a video of “Waka Waka by Shakira”
3. Find the song lyrics of “Waka Waka by Shakira”

While I am searching the songs, I get to know that we can download songs via

Puan Foziah also introduce to us:

Moyea Fl v downloader

Personally, this is my first time I learn how to download song/video!!! Moreover, Puan Foziah also assigns us to prepare a power point presentation on how we can download step by step on the task given to us. I also personally learn on how to use the button of ‘print screen’ to capture imagine of the screen.

In conclusion, I gather many realizations that help my personal and professional development as future teacher! I having fun today exploring new things yet it are beneficial for me to expand my knowledge specifically in technology!!

Can’t wait to explore more on the next class Puan Foziah!

WEEK 3 (26 JULY 2010)

Today is the third day for the class PBEY3102 Using and Developing Resources for the ESL Classroom. After Puan Foziah greeted us, she distributes the books. Each one of us gets a copy of a book entitled Teaching English in the Primary Classroom by Susan Halliwell. She directs our attention to look at Chapter 1: Working with Young Language Learners. Next, Puan Foziah introduces to us 6 qualities of young learners. There are:

WORKING WITH YOUNG LANGUAGE LEARNERS

1.1 Children’s ability to grasp meaning

1.2 Children’s creative use of limited language resources

1.3 Children’s capacity for interact learning

1.4 Children’s instinct for play and fun

1.5 The role of Imagination

1.6 The instinct for interaction and talk.

At first, I thought I will be listening to a mass lecture conducted by Puan Foziah. But, my prediction is wrong. Puan Foziah informs us that she is not going to explain to us all the subtopics of chapter 1. But, she tells us that we have to discuss and prepare presentation. She divides us with 6 groups. So, each group will need to discuss a subtopic from Chapter 1 assign to us. Today’s lesson is interesting as I realize that Puan Foziah implement some practice of Constructivist approach. We have to construct our own meaning by discussing in our group. At the end of product, we have to prepare power point presentation and share what we have understood to the whole class. This is interesting approach as we are not merely passive recipient of knowledge. This ultimately makes us be active and engage in discussing.

SELF-REFLECTION

My group comprises of me, Kumar, Fazlin, Arina, Shuhada and Husni. My group is assign to discuss about 1.5 The role of Imagination.

“Children delight in imagination and fantasy. It is more than simply a matter of enjoyment, however. In the primary school, children are very busy making sense of the world about them. They are identifying pattern and also deviation from that pattern. They test out their versions of the world through fantasy and confirm how the world actually is by imagining how it might be different. In the language classroom this capacity for fantasy and imagination has a very constructive part to play”
(Susan Halliwell, 1992)

From this, I realize that the role of imagination is crucial in in the language classroom that promote students to construct their understanding. This is because, with imagination/fantasy it provides very powerful stimulus for real language use. The example of activity is when teacher asks children to draw a monster. Children like to draw and imagine the monster in their own imagination or in their own fantasy. Next, teacher can ask children to share with their friends their drawing. When they are talking about the monster, this ultimately will make them ‘talk’ in English language. This gives me significant realization about the important role of imagination in children in ESL classroom.
In a group, we manage to prepare a PowerPoint presentation and download a video regarding this subtopic.

PRESENTATION SESSION

There are two groups that present today. The groups discuss about 1.3 Children’s Capacity for indirect learning and 1.6 The instinct for Interaction and Talk.

Presentation 1: 1.3 Children’s capacity for Indirect Learning

From this presentation, I realize that children are also acquiring knowledge via indirect learning subconsciously. Children can internalize things in their own from their environment. I personally believe that, children should learn and construct their own understanding from the experience. I also think that forcing children to acquire something or knowledge can make them stress and not practical. Thus, form the presentation. I realize that children has the capacity for indirect learning, so teachers can plan many activities that promote indirect learning. The examples of activities are:

Hangman

Charade

Guessing games

Puzzle

Presentation 2: 1.6 The Instinct for Interaction and Talk

This presentation makes me realize that the children are curious and like to engage in interaction by simply talking. In the ESL classroom, teachers should not stop them from talking because talking can help children to develop the use and the practice part of English language. This is because talking or speaking plays an important role for language development. Teacher also must aware that INTERACTION play major role here. From this presentation, it also gives me ideas about how teacher can promote talking in English in the ESL classroom. There are many activities teacher can conduct such as:

Storytelling

Sharing session about their drawings/experience

Dialog/situation

Moreover, Puan Foziah also comments that we should always remember:
“Each and every student is different. They are unique in their own way”
Thus this makes me aware that as future teacher; we should force and expect them to engage in talking. This is because, every child has different capability. Thus, teacher should not stop them talking or force them. But, teachers should give them opportunities and let them learn and engage actively in their preference way.

In conclusion, I leant about specific qualities of children that teachers should aware of. This ultimately will help us as a future teacher to design activities that promote English language that in line with children’s capacity and qualities. Moreover, today’s lesson gives me great opportunities for me to engage in discussion about today’s topic. I also manage to read the chapter 1 today. So, thanks to Puan Foziah as she photocopy for us a quality book written by Susan Halliwell.

Next week is my group turns to present 1.5 The role of Imagination. So, wish us luck!

WEEK 2 (21 July 2010)

Today is the second day of the lesson for PBEY 3102 Using and Developing Resources for the ESL classroom. Before the lecturer come in the Computer Lab, I have set up my own lap top and be prepared to open Photoshop CS3 in case Puan Foziah might want to teach us on how to edit picture today. After a few moments, Puan Foziah enters Computer Lab. As usual she greets us with her lovely smile.

At the first, she distributed to us a questionnaire each one of us. She told us to fill in our personal details and also fill in some details regarding our prior knowledge. I realize that, the scope of questionnaire is basically on the use of internet, skills specifically in editing audio files, videos and photos, etc. According to Puan Foziah, this questionnaire will help her to collect information about our prior knowledge and consequently will help her to plan for next lesson activity. During the process of filling in the details in the questionnaire, I realize that my knowledge in technology is still little. There are a few things that I might not be able to do for example, video editing. It is hoped that, throughout this course, I will learn this skill.

Puan Foziah also introduces to us five main modules that we are going to learn this semester which include:

1. Internet and Computing skill

2. Photo editing

3. Audio editing

4. Video editing

5. Software for ELT (English Language Teaching)

I hope with these five modules, I will master and gain some knowledge about these specific skills. I believe that 21st educator needs to equip with IT knowledge so that we can be creative and innovative in creating our own teaching resources instead of using text books and typical teaching aids. I believe that, with these knowledge and skills, it can help me to develop my personal and professional growth as a future educator.

Puan Foziah also give each one of us Assignment 1 (Blogging for Understanding) which require us to create a blog (as she informed us in a previous lesson) where we need to post our individual reflection. She also briefly told us the blog will be assessed based on the following criteria:

 Timely and number of blogs, minimum is 14 (5%)

 Depth of reflection (8%)

 Creativity (5%)

 Your comments on your classmates’ blog (2%)

While we are typing and open our blog, Puan Foziah questioned us “Why you need to see the keypad?”. Then, Puan Foziah introduce to us on TOUCH TYPING. Frankly speaking, at first I might wonder what is touch typing is. This is because, it was my first time I heard touch typing. She further explained to us that touch typing is a way of using keyboard by placing fingers at the correct keys without looking at each key! This sound so impossible, however, Puan Foziah said it is possible not to see to see keypad if practice a right way in palcing our finegrs. I been tried a few times and seem it works!! In addition, I also manage to get sofware for touch typing from Puan Foziah.

Besides that, I also learned something new today-“SKYDRIVE”.Puan Foziah introduce this terminology that totally allien for me. I immediately Google for this word and I found out that, Windows Live SkyDrive (initially Windows Live Folders) is “...a part of Microsoft's Windows Live range of online services. SkyDrive is a file storage and sharing service that allows users to upload files to the computing cloud, then access them from a web browser...” (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SkyDrive). From this definition, I realize that, SkyDrive is a usefull space for us to keep documents trough online. Puan Foziah also added that it allowing us to keep files private, share with contacts or even make the files public. She added that Public-shared files do not requires a Windows Live ID to acess. I was shocked when I found out the serive of skydrive currently offers 21GB of free personal storage with individual files limited to 50 MB. This make me wonder about the miracle of this skydrive where we can keep a lot of files, without need to buy a pendrive! Although skydrive seems new and strange to me as I have never seen and use it before, I wish to learn and exploit more so that I keep documents or files that related with our teaching field in this skydrive.

In short, today’s lesson indeed an eye-opener for me about the use of technology so that we as a future teachers can be creative and globalised teacher in the future. To be honest, I can’t wait for the next lesson!!!

WEEK 1 (20 JULY 2010)

Today is the first day I attended the class of PBEY 3102 Using and Developing Resources for the ESL classroom. Before the lecturer entered the Computer Lab, one of my friends, Shazni asked me a question “Nizam, what we are going to learn today? Resources?” within a second I replied “Oh, I am pretty sure we are going to do our own resources...of...teaching aids...word cards, pictures, relias, etc”. I was thinking that this subject will be quite similar the same thing as I have been done In Institute Pendidikan Guru Malaysia, campus Ilmu Khas where I used to do a lot of teaching aids especially for my micro teaching sessions.

After a few moments, I get to know the lecturer of this course, Puan Foziah. She greeted us with warm welcome to this course. She smile sweetly and told the whole class that she is going to teach us for this particular subject. I feel comfortable and pretty much relax. However, when she briefly explains to us about this subject, I was totally SHOCK! She told us that we are not going to do anymore teaching aids like word cards, relias, and pictures in this course. Then, she continued told us that in this course we are going to learn about how teachers can create our own resources by using technology. At this point, I questioned myself “What TECHNOLOGY?” Frankly speaking I was shock and I am wonder how we are going to create resources for teaching aids by only using technology. For sure, no more teachings aids like I did in I Institute Pendidikan Guru Malaysia, campus Ilmu Khas. Then, I told myself that I am going to learn something new in this course. This makes me motivated to learn this course! Right after this, I told Shazni that my prediction of this course was incorrect.

Puan Fouziah specifically assigned us to do these three things:

 We have to create our own Blog

 We have to buy 8gb Pendrive each one of us

 We have to install Photoshop CS3

BlOG? Frankly speaking, I never have a Blog before. I have heard and seen the Blog but I do not know how create a Blog. With the help of my friends, Visva and Kumar I finally create a Blog for this subject. Puan Foziah told us we should post our personal and individual reflection from week 1 to week 14 in our own Blog. Today, I manage to create a Blog. At least I learned something new today!

Pendrive for 8gb? At first, I was shocked why must each one of us have a 8gb pendrive as it is too big gb. I only have 2gb Pendrive that I rarely used it. So what for to buy 8gb pendrive? In addition, I am sure the pendrive will cost me a lot of RM. However, Puan Foziah told us that this pendrive will be used for us to keep our resources of teachings like pictures, animations, videos, songs, games and etc. She also added that this pendrive will be also use for us to keep certain software that related to this course. So finally I realize that, this pendrive will be useful and I can see its practicality of having it. Moreover, I can bring it anywhere as I go. Puan Foziah also told us that If we are posting in rural area, we just need to have a laptop, the pendrive and perhaps broadband.

Install Photoshop CS3? What’s that? I never heard it before. According to Puan Foziah this software is used for us to edit photo. I immediately Google to find out more about Photoshop CS3. It is “Adobe Photoshop, or simply Photoshop, is a graphics editing program developed and published by Adobe Systems. It is the current market leader for commercial bitmap and image manipulation software, and is the flagship product of Adobe Systems…” (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photoshop_cs3). From this definition, I get to know it is published by Adobe System and it can be used to manipulate image or editing pictures. At first, I am so worried because I did not know where I can get this software. In addition, I am not good in downloading it from internet. However, today, right after this class, I manage to download the Photoshop CS3 with the helped from Teoh Jen Sen. Thank you! I realize this software will be helpful for us to edit pictures so that we can produce a clear and quality picture as teaching aids. This is because; I realize that pictures in internet sometimes may not suits with what we are looking for. Thus, I with the use of this software may help to solve this problem.

In short, from this first lesson, I realize that this course offers me a room for learning and discovering technology in more depth specifically in creating our own teaching recourses. It is hoped that, at the end of this course I will be a techno-savvy teacher!!!
